REF NO.: 1

SUBJECT: Mayor to address students at Memorial’s St. John’s campus orientation

DATE: September 1, 2011

For the first time, the mayor of St. John’s, Mr. Dennis O’Keefe, will speak to nearly 2,000 new students during orientation on Memorial University’s St. John’s campus. President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Gary Kachanoski, along with Dr. Rob Shea, dean, pro-tempore of Student Affairs and Services, and Michael Walsh of Memorial’s student union (MUNSU) will also welcome the new students into the Memorial family.
“Orientation is their first taste of the Memorial experience,” said Dr. Shea. “They’re coming in eager and excited to start their new journey and we want them to be even more excited about being here once it’s all over. Our orientation is a fantastic combination of advice, information and interaction, and it really demonstrates the importance and the impact of social and academic integration in the student experience.”
Student Affairs and Services hosts new student orientation on the St. John’s campus, along with a concurrent orientation for parents of new students. Orientation is a high energy event which introduces new students to each other, to life at Memorial and the programs and services available to them.
Memorial University will hold orientation events at its St. John’s, Corner Brook and Marine Institute campuses. Orientation will begin Sept. 5 at the St. John’s and Grenfell campuses, and Sept. 6 at the Marine Institute.
Registration begins on the St. John’s campus at 12 p.m. with speakers beginning at 1 p.m.
