SUBJECT: Fisheries and Marine Institute (MI) of Memorial University hosts Ocean Net Day

DATE: September 19, 2011

Note to editors:
The media is invited to attend Ocean Net Day celebrations taking place Monday, Sept. 20, 2011, at Topsail Beach.
In honour of Ocean Net Day the Marine Institute’s Ocean Net will participate with the Town of Paradise and Conception Bay South (CBS) to host a beach/shoreline cleanup at Topsail Beach. The event will also feature music, face painting and a mussel boil.
More than 100 students from Paradise Elementary and St. George’s Elementary in CBS will join volunteers for the event which begins at 10 a.m.
MI students and staff, divers from Ocean Quest, volunteers from the Friends of Topsail Beach community group, staff from the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, and the Town of CBS will be on hand for the event.
The goal is to educate students on the importance of conservation and encourage them to take a more active role in protecting the marine and ocean environment. Since 1997, more than 30,000 Newfoundlanders and Labradorians have cleaned more than 1,500 beaches, shorelines and underwater areas.
Ocean Net Day is a provincial celebration for the MI Ocean Net volunteers and their commitment to protecting oceans and ocean environments in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Anyone wishing to join a beach cleanup, or to host one of their own, can register online at www.mi.mun.ca/mioceannet or by calling 709-778-0328.
