SUBJECT: Competition tests leadership, skills of Marine Institute nautical science students

DATE: February 23, 2012

The Company of Master Mariners of Canada (NL Division), in collaboration with the Marine Institute, will host the country’s first ever Nautical Skills Competition Feb. 24-25.
The Nautical Skills Competition is a series of challenging exercises designed to test the knowledge and ability of future deck officers and marine captains and develop their leadership skills and confidence. The competition looks to promote the maritime sector, encourage team building and professionalism and foster a culture of safety.
Fifty-four students from the Marine Institute’s nautical science program have entered the competition. Nine teams will compete in five different exercises in dynamic positioning, seamanship, cargo work, shiphandling and navigation. Teams will have 45 minutes to complete each exercise and will be awarded points based on their ability to finish the task and on the level of skill demonstrated.
At the start of each exercise, teams will present a “safety moment” that will illustrate to judges how the team will incorporate safety into their exercise tasks.
On Friday, Feb. 24, students will take part in a two and a half hour briefing, beginning at 6 p.m., to review the exercises and simulators that will be used.
The competition will take place on Saturday, Feb. 25, from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Marine Institute.
A number of local, national and international companies from the marine transportation industry are sponsoring the 2012 competition including Lloyds Register, Newfoundland Transhipment Limited, DNV, Rutter, Fednav, Seamanning Services Ltd, Kongsberg Maritime Simulation, NEAS, Atlantic Towing, Woodwards, Husky Energy, Suncor, Canship Ugland, St. John Ambulance, Canadian Coast Guard, Virtual Marine Technology and Mercers Marine.
