SUBJECT: SPARKS sponsors haiku competition

DATE: December 14, 2010

The Faculty of Arts, sponsor of the second annual SPARKS Literary Festival on Sunday, Jan. 23, 2011, is pleased to announce the details of a poetry competition in association with the festival.
Open to all SPARKS supporters; including audience members, festival readers, and volunteers, the competition is designed to encourage the poet in everyone.
Poets are asked to submit one or two poems in the form of a haiku. Entrants are encouraged to read the guidelines about the classic haiku form on the SPARKS website at www.mun.ca/arts/events/SPARKS.php.
Contest entrants are asked to include an image of sparks or of fire in some form in their poems.
According to poet and professor Mary Dalton, the competition is “another manifestation of festival warmth.”
Submissions can be emailed to SPARKShaiku@gmail.com or sent by post to: SPARKS Haiku Competition, Dept. of English, Memorial University of Newfoundland, St, John’s, A1C 5S7. Submissions must be received by Thursday, Jan. 6, 2011.
The haiku entries will be judged anonymously by poets Nick Avis and Tom Dawe, both eminent practitioners of the form. The winner will be announced during the final session of the SPARKS festival on Jan. 23 and will receive a selection of books and a gift certificate for the Bookery on Signal Hill Road.
Further details on the festival and the competition (including haiku guidelines) can be found at www.mun.ca/arts/events/SPARKS.php.
