News Release

REF NO.: 222

SUBJECT: PSA: Words in Edgewise kicks off the summer with 100-year-old hot jazz

DATE: June 7, 2011

Each month, Memorial University’s Graduate Program in Humanities, the Eastern Edge Gallery and Magpie magazine present some of the most exciting and intriguing artists and academics sharing their work in a variety of disciplines and media. It’s like a good old-fashioned variety show with equal parts sequins and tweed!
Fourteen artists, academics, activists and ordinary folks have accepted the challenge of presenting something, anything, through 20 images that change automatically every 20 seconds. The presentations will range from concrete poetry to fashion, from performance to visual art, from blood cells to the Haitian earthquake, and all points in between. The presenters include: Walter Mackey, Ian McCurdy, Laura Nelson-Hamilton, Justin Brake, Jai Me, Rose Bockner, Kevin Hehir, Megan Morrison, Malin Enstrom, Chris Mong, Joanna Barker, Jamie-Lee Cormier, Margaret Dragu and Ailsa Craig.
Memorial University student Hirschfeld Shibley, a multi-instrumentalist originally from New England, will be playing a selection of popular vaudeville and Hot Jazz hits from the early 1900s on ukulele and kazoo in the Eastern Edge Gallery parking lot (weather permitting). Words in Edgewise takes place at the Eastern Edge Gallery on June 9 at 8 p.m. It is hosted by Morgan Murray. Admission by donation.
