SUBJECT: Minister Clyde Jackman to speak at Youth and the Oceans Conference

Clyde Jackman, provincial minister of fisheries and aquaculture, has been added to the list of speakers for the Youth and the Oceans Conference at the Fisheries and Marine Institute (MI) of Memorial University on Thursday, Feb. 24.
            Minister Jackman will provide remarks on behalf of the provincial government to close to 200 junior high and high school students attending the conference. He is scheduled to speak between 9 a.m. and 9:30 a.m.
            The conference will celebrate the role of youth in marine environmental activity in Newfoundland and Labrador, with students from across the Avalon Peninsula expected to attend. The students will take part in a day-long series of thought-provoking presentations and interactive discussions that focus on marine environmental issues representing leadership and career opportunities for youth.
            All events take place in Hampton Hall and the MI gymnasium at the Marine Institute’s Ridge Road campus in St. John’s. In addition to Minister Jackman, speakers at Thursday’s Youth and the Oceans Conference include Glenn Blackwood, executive director, MI; Justin Dearing, conference co-ordinator, MI Ocean Net; and Meagan LeMessurier, a Marine Institute student who took part in an Arctic expedition with Students on Ice in 2010.
            The Youth and the Oceans Conference will run from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. and will include an awards presentation, youth forum and tours of the Marine Institute’s flume tank, aquaculture labs and remotely operated vehicle simulator.
             Youth and the Oceans Conferences are supported by the Gainey Foundation; the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador’s Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture; and the Department of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development.
