SUBJECT: Memorial University’s Orientation 2010 welcomes new students

DATE: September 2, 2010

More than 2,400 new students attending Memorial this fall are getting ready for the official start of classes on Wednesday, Sept. 8. But before classes start, students have the opportunity to become involved in the university’s biggest and highest-energy event of the year.
Orientation on the St. John’s campus is a two-day event taking place on Monday, Sept. 6, and Tuesday, Sept. 7. The theme for this year’s welcoming ceremonies is “GET Launched!” The high-energy event will not only launch students, but catapult them into their university careers.
“Orientation is a great way for first-year students to get involved in the Memorial community,” said Amy Butt, manager, Answers, Student Affairs and Services. “This fun, interactive event helps new students with the transition into university life.”
Orientation will kick off with a welcome lunch at the University Centre at 11 a.m. and registration will take place from 12 to 2 p.m. in the Physical Education Building on Sept. 6.
Dr. Gary Kachanoski, Memorial’s new president, will also be on hand to address the students for the first time. There will be a high-energy pep rally showcasing student clubs, cheerleaders and the Memorial Sea-Hawks. The event will provide students with important information and advice they will need for their upcoming university careers.
Again this year, a Parent Orientation is taking place on Monday, Sept. 6. This is designed to provide parents with information about student services, financial and academic information and the social supports Memorial has to offer.
All first year students are encouraged to take part in this year’s Orientation. It is a chance to get familiar with life at Memorial, meet new people, and discover their place to become. For more details on the schedule of events, visit www.mun.ca/orientation.
