SUBJECT: Harris Centre/MMSB Waste Management Research Fund now open for applications

The Harris Centre, Memorial’s hub for regional policy and development issues, is pleased to announce the application process is now open for a new fund supporting solid waste-related research in Newfoundland and Labrador.
The result of a partnership with the Multi-Materials Stewardship Board (MMSB), the fund offers up to $15,000 in funding per project and is open to all Memorial students, researchers and faculty. Submissions from a range of faculties are encouraged, from Arts and Science, to Engineering, including multi-disciplinary work and community engagement.
One of the primary objectives of the fund is to provide community decision-makers with research-tested knowledge to support waste management-related policies and planning.
The idea of community engaged research has been central since the fund’s inception. After the announcement of the fund at the end of the summer, a group of interested parties, from researchers, to community members, to policy-makers, met to discuss current research related to waste-management, and to identify areas in need of further attention.
As Dr. Josh Lepawsky, chair of the fund, and department of geography faculty member, explained, “with an issue that affects us all, like waste management, community involvement only adds to the research process, increasing the likelihood that the research produced will go on to have positive benefits in the communities of Newfoundland and Labrador.”
The deadline for applications is Nov. 19. Interested applicants are encouraged to visit the Harris Centre website at www.mun.ca/harriscentre to access the online application forms.
