SUBJECT: First Flight 491 Legacy scholarships to be awarded

The first students to benefit from the Flight 491 Legacy Fund will be on hand at a special ceremony at Memorial University on Friday, Nov. 5. Scholarships and bursaries will be awarded to 24 worthy students from Memorial University, the university’s Marine Institute and the College of the North Atlantic.
This legacy fund was established to honour the memory of the victims of the crash of helicopter Flight 491 on March 12, 2009. The funding for these awards will serve as a lasting legacy to those who lost their lives in Flight 491.
Dr. Gary Kachanoski, president and vice-chancellor of Memorial, will join with members of the Flight 491 families; Brian Henley, chair of the Legacy Fund committee; provincial Education Minister Dr. Darin King; Dr. Peter Fisher, head, Academic and Student Affairs, Marine Institute; and College President Bruce Hollett at the D. F. Cook Recital Hall in Memorial’s School of Music, at 10 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 5.
The Flight 491 Legacy Fund Committee was established by industry partners, Newfoundland Oil and Gas Industries Association (NOIA), the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP) and the St. John’s Oilfield Technical Society (OTS).
