REF NO.: 135

SUBJECT: Closing party for the Feb-U-Hairy challenge

DATE: February 25, 2011

A closing party for the Feb-U-Hairy challenge will be held on Feb. 28 at the Landing, University Centre, room 3018, St. John’s campus from 6-8 p.m. The evening will include prizes for the top participants, speakers and information on cervical screening and the importance of regular Pap tests. This is a public event, everyone is welcome. Food and refreshments will be provided.
Throughout the month of February, over 30 women have been growing out their leg hair in an effort to raise awareness about cervical screening. People were challenged to not shave their legs for the month of Feb-U-Hairy (the month previously known as February), or to shave once this month if they are not regular shavers. To date, growers have successfully raised over $3,000 through generous donations from the public. These funds are being used to support Planned Parenthood’s Thursday evening Pap clinic.
This is the second annual Feb-U-Hairy, initiated by Kathleen Callanan and Angelique Myles, two medical students, in partnership with Planned Parenthood.
“Cervical cancer is preventable with regular cervical screening,” Ms. Callanan explained. “Women are encouraged to get a regular Pap test, which can help screen for abnormal cells in the cervix.”
Ms. Myles says “This is an important health issue in this province as Newfoundland and Labrador has the highest rate of mortality from cervical cancer compared to the rest of Canada.
”People interested in learning more about cervical screening or making a donation can do so by going to Planned Parenthood’s website, www.nlsexualhealthcentre.org. For more information, please email febuhairy.fundraiser@gmail.com.
