SUBJECT: The Future of Medical Education in Canada

DATE: January 25, 2010

The national launch of the report, The Future of Medical Education in Canada (FMEC):   A Collective Vision for MD Education, will take place on Thursday, Jan. 28, from 2– 4 p.m. in the main auditorium, Health Sciences Centre. The 30-month FMEC project, spearheaded by the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada (AFMC), set out to conduct a comprehensive review of MD education in Canada, assess current and future societal needs, and identify the changes needed to better align the two. The 10 recommendations and five enabling recommendations that comprise this collective vision present an integrated national framework for change for Canadian MD education into the 21st century. The FMEC Collective Vision was unanimously approved by the AFMC board of directors in November 2009. The National Launch for the FMEC Collective Vision will connect faculties of medicine across the country via a live video link. The event, hosted by the AFMC, will begin with a presentation by the three co-chairs of the FMEC Task
Force on Implementation Strategy, Drs. Nick Busing, Jay Rosenfield and James Rourke (dean of Medicine at Memorial University), and will feature a short video and cross-country Q&A session. Limited hard copies of the FMEC Collective Vision will be available at the launch.
