Memorial University’s Leslie Harris Centre of Regional Policy and Development is pleased to announce $100,000 in funding to support Memorial researchers.
Awarded through the applied research fund, and provided by the Department of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development and the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, the support will be distributed to nine successful awardees selected through a competitive application process, open to Memorial faculty and students across all units and faculties.
“These are exciting projects,” said Jennifer Warburton, operations manager at the Harris Centre. “Each has the potential to make a real impact at the community-level in regions all over Newfoundland and Labrador.”
Many of the funded projects are province-wide in scope – Dr. Jill Allison’s investigation into rural healthcare issues, for example – while others have a more regionally-specific focus, like PhD student Ryan Gibson’s research into regional governance on the Northern Peninsula.
Applied research tends to be topical in nature, and that timeliness is strongly reflected in all of the funded projects. For example, Dr. Shafiq Alam will continue his research into developing biomass-derived methods for removing heavy/toxic materials from contaminated mine sites, such as the one in Buchans, and Dr. Michael Wernerheim will examine the net contribution of the forestry industry to the Newfoundland and Labrador economy.
