News Release
REF NO.: 181
SUBJECT: PSA: Memory candlelight service for those bereaved by suicide
DATE: December 8, 2009
Survivors of suicide, in partnership with chaplains at Memorial University and Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training Newfoundland and Labrador (ASIST NL), are holding the annual candlelight ceremony at St. John’s Chapel (attached to the School of Social Work), Memorial University on Sunday, Dec. 13, 2009, at 3 p.m.
This event is held for those who have lost loved ones by suicide and to support family and friends. The holiday season can be an especially difficult time for survivors of suicide. A simultaneous event is being organized by the Northwest Bereaved by Suicide Support Group in Derry, Northern Ireland, that has developed links with our group.
At the service, family and friends light a candle in memory of their loved one and share poems and prayers. Please bring along a framed picture of the person you wish to remember for a photo arrangement. These photos will be arranged amid candles for participants to collectively visualize the many faces of our loved ones.
Please feel free to bring along something for a cup of tea as we gather for refreshments and conversation following the service. Music will be provided by Shelley Neville and Peter Halley. Parking will be available in Area 22 which is accessible directly from the parkway next to the chapel.
