News Release

REF NO.: 1

SUBJECT: Memorial University prepping for first day of school

DATE: September 4, 2009

Memorial University is ready to greet all incoming students to the beginning of a new school year at its St. John’s, Corner Brook and Marine Institute campuses.
Classes resume at Memorial’s St. John’s and Grenfell College campuses Wednesday, Sept. 9. Most Marine Institute students return to class on Tuesday, Sept. 8.
Over 2,400 new undergraduate students registered to attend Memorial in the fall semester, will be welcomed to the fall semester at Orientation 2009, Memorial’s biggest, most high-energy event of the year. On Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 7-8, new students will get acquainted with what will be their second home for the next few years. Orientation is a program designed to allow students to become familiar with their surroundings, mingle with new friends, get tips on improving their ability to get good grades and, most of all, have a good time.
“Orientation provides students with a fun and informative initial foundation upon which to build a successful academic career,” said Tom Brophy, director of
Student Success Programs at Student Affairs and Services. “Students will be introduced to fellow new students as well as all the wonderful programs and services available at Memorial.”
In addition to student orientation, a parent orientation will take place Sunday and Monday, Sept. 6-7, on the St. John’s campus. Parent orientation was created to address questions and concerns that parents may have as their child progresses in their academic career at Memorial. Topics include dealing with finances and social supports at this time of transition. Parents can choose to attend either day as both sessions are the same.
Registration for Orientation 2009 will take place on Monday, Sept. 7, from 12-12:30 p.m. in the Field House in St. John’s.
For more information on the schedule of events for the St. John’s campus orientation, see www.mun.ca/orientation. Sir Willfred Grenfell College in Corner Brook is also holding orientation beginning Monday, Sept. 7, with icebreaker games, snacks, concerts, information sessions, campus tours, and many other fun and exciting events. Orientation for all new students of the Marine Institute will take place on Friday, Sept. 4. This full-day event will provide students with important information on the programs and services available and give them the tools needed to succeed at Marine.
“We want students to think of Memorial as more than just an educational institution – we want them to think of it as home for the next number of years,” said Mr. Brophy. “There’s no place like home, and through orientation they will find, there’s no place like Memorial.”
