SUBJECT: Memorial to host international business competition

DATE: June 17, 2010

The Faculty of Business Administration is set to welcome students and coaches from all over the world when Memorial hosts the Network of International Business Schools (NIBS) Case Competition in February 2011.
Students and faculty from nine schools representing several different countries will be on the St. John’s campus for the competition, in which student teams will analyze business case studies and present their results to a team of judges from the local business community.
Memorial hosted the NIBS competition in 1997 and 2004, and has a strong record of success in the competition. Last year, in Kolding, Denmark, the team placed second, and in 2009 Memorial’s team captured the gold medal. “NIBS is a great opportunity for our students to test their skills and network with students from around the world,” said Peggy Coady, coach of the 2010 team and organizer of the 2011 competition. “By hosting the competition, more of our students can be involved and we have the opportunity to showcase Memorial.”
As the event draws near, organizers will be looking for volunteers to help with all aspects of the competition. Student representatives, team hosts, guest judges and corporate sponsors will be needed for the week-long competition.
Dr. Wilfred Zerbe, dean of the Faculty of Business Administration, said he is delighted to host the competition.
“Competitions like this offer a special opportunity for cross-cultural learning and I have no doubt that it will be a valuable experience for our students as well as for the student competitors from around the world,” he said. “Hosting the competition is an honour and we are planning a memorable and special week for all attendees.”
Teams interested in participating submit a written case for the qualifying round in the fall. The top 10 submissions are chosen to compete in the final round, which is what Memorial will host in February.
