SUBJECT: Marine Institute to hold graduation on Friday, Sept. 18

The Fisheries and Marine Institute (MI) of Memorial University of Newfoundland invites the media to attend the graduation ceremony for the Marine Engineering Technician Training Plan (METTP) on Friday, Sept. 18 at 10:30 a.m. at the Drill Hall in Pleasantville.
The Marine Engineering Technician Training Plan is a cooperative venture between the Canadian Navy and the Marine Institute. The METTP trains marine engineering technicians in the field of marine engineering. The course runs for two years and all naval cadets study the METTP at the MI campus on Ridge Road in St. John’s.
At the end of the two-year course at MI, graduating cadets advance to full-time careers with the Canadian Navy and will be stationed in either Halifax, Nova Scotia or Esquimalt, B.C. While with the Canadian Navy, the cadets will be employed as marine engineering technicians.
This partnership between the Marine Institute and the Canadian Navy has been in place since 1992. More than 1,000 navy cadets have graduated from MI during this time.
Friday’s ceremony will include remarks from Glenn Blackwood, executive director, Marine Institute; Captain Gilles Hainse, Commanding Officer, Fleet Maintenance Facility Cape Scott; Commander Simon Page, Commandant, Canadian Forces Naval Engineering School Halifax and Stewart Hughes, Lieutenant-Commander Canadian Forces Naval Engineering School St. John’s.
