SUBJECT: Event preps students for life after university

DATE: March 1, 2010

Memorial is handing students a road map for the future, guiding those who are set to graduate in the right direction.
A unique event – known as Grad Street Festival – will take over the third floor of the University Centre on Wednesday, March 3, from 10 a.m.-to 4 p.m. in The Landing.
A series of booths will be set up providing students with information about things such as how to register for convocation ceremonies, secure tickets and how to rent a cap and gown.
Students will also receive post-graduation career counselling, discover the perks of becoming a member of the Memorial alumni community, explore graduate programs and learn more about diploma framing, class rings, souvenirs and apparel.
The event is based on the concept of “a road to your future” with each stop along the way containing specific information.
“Directional road signage will guide students along the road on a natural path as they complete the steps necessary to graduate,” festival co-ordinator Sarah Stoodley of the Division of Marketing and Communications. “The festival atmosphere will be accentuated with prizes, and will ultimately help alleviate any concerns students have about any aspect of becoming an alumnus or alumna of Memorial.
“Students will have easy access to all the pertinent information they will need to become a graduate and on into the work force,” she added.
Marketing and Communications is collaborating with a number of units and departments to organize the event for a second year, including Alumni Affairs and Development, the Registrar’s Office, the Centre for Career Development, the School of Graduate Studies, the Marine Institute and the University Bookstore.
