SUBJECT: Memorial University launches third annual Rant like Rick contest

DATE: February 13, 2009

Memorial University of Newfoundland officially launched its student recruitment campaign Rant like Rick today. In this, the third year for the contest, Memorial is upping the ante by offering a grand prize valued at $10,000.
Based on the concept of Rick Mercer’s rant component of his show The Rick Mercer Report, the contest asks high school student to develop and film their own rant about a topic that is important to them. In addition to the grand prize, two runner-up prizes of a $2,550 tuition voucher will also be awarded.
“In the two years that Rant like Rick has been running, we have seen some outstanding entries,” said Michael Pickard, associate director (marketing) with Memorial. “We’re hoping that offering a grand prize valued at $10,000 will raise the bar even higher and challenge students to get really creative with their rants this year.”
“Rant like Rick has been an extremely successful recruitment campaign and has helped attract some of the brightest and best young minds from across the country to Memorial,” said Shona Perry-Maidment, acting director of the Office of Student Recruitment. “This is a major prize and for one student, it means being able to complete their first-year studies at Memorial without having to worry about the financial aspect.”
Rant like Rick is open to grade 11 and 12 students currently enrolled in high school and who will be eligible to attend Memorial University in September 2009 or 2010. The deadline for entries is Sunday March 22, 2009. For more information on how to enter, including detailed rules and regulations, visit www.mun.ca/rant.
