SUBJECT: Grenfell: Theatre Program presents Suburban Motel by George F. Walker

DATE: February 9, 2009

The first production of the season at the Grenfell College Fine Arts Theatre is Suburban Motel by George F. Walker. The production consists of four one act plays by renowned Canadian playwright George F. Walker – Problem Child, Featuring Loretta, Adult Entertainment and Criminal Genius. These plays, all set in the same seedy motel room, are part of Walker’s sexy, violent and hugely entertaining six-play Suburban Motel series.
Have you ever wondered when you check into a room in a motel what has happened before you took that room? The cruddy room that serves as the setting for these plays is populated at various times with an ex-con addicted to talk shows, a drug-addicted cop and his sad, sad wife, a sex-crazed lawyer and burnt out cop, Phillie the drunken janitor, a Russian Mafia maid, an ex-prostitute fighting to get her baby back, “Shirl The Pearl” (a gun moll), an officious social worker, inept criminals, a pathetic screw salesmen, a booker for topless bars, an arsonist cook and a wannabe porn star.
Perhaps these characters are not the ideal previous tenants of your motel room but viewed from the safety of a theatre seat, their stories are hilarious, touching, sexy and heartbreaking. These plays range from Tarantino-style violence to romance to insane sex-farce. The Suburban Motel plays have been produced all over the world to massive critical and popular acclaim.
Problem Child and Featuring Loretta are directed by award-winning director Michael Waller and Adult Entertainment and Criminal Genius are directed by Ken Livingstone, head, Fine Arts. Set design is by Ken Livingstone with Bruce Bryne, costume design by roy Hansen robitschek with Wendy Vey, and lighting design by Jim Chalmers-Gow.
A friendly warning: These plays are not for the faint of heart – they include profane language, graphic sexual situations, gunshots, extreme violence and simulated smoking.
Problem Child and Featuring Loretta play Feb. 16, 18 and 20 at 8 p.m. and Adult Entertainment and Criminal Genius play Feb. 17, 19 and 21 at 8 p.m. Tickets are available at the college bookstore or at the box office on the evening of each performance. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors.
