SUBJECT: Grenfell: SIFE Grenfell: Spirit Award winners at 2009 SIFE National Exposition

Only eight weeks after establishing a SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise) team at Sir Wilfred Grenfell College, SIFE Grenfell not only competed in the opening rounds of competition at the 2009 SIFE National Exposition, but was awarded a 2009 Spirit Award, which recognizes teams who have not yet fully implemented their projects, but who have demonstrated their projects’ potential for significant community impact, while meeting the SIFE judging criteria.
ACE (Advancing Canadian Entrepreneurship) is a national charitable organization whose mission is to teach and ignite young Canadians to create brighter futures for themselves and their communities; SIFE is an ACE program that encourages and recognizes team-based programs that have been designed to create economic opportunity in communities by teaching others about market economics, entrepreneurship, success skills, financial literacy, business ethics and sustainability.
Three members of SIFE Grenfell travelled to Toronto to compete in this year’s expo: Karyn Inder, president, Kayla Tobin, manager of external relations, and Justin Coombs, project manager. Two of SIFE Grenfell’s major projects for the upcoming academic year will benefit the Dunfield Park Community Centre, and the local small business community. Grenfell faculty adviser Jacqueline Walsh was also inducted as a 2009 John Dobson Foundation Fellow. Janice Ryan and Julie Pitcher, advisory board members and business faculty, also attended the competition in support of the SIFE Grenfell team.
As always, this province’s teams had an impressive showing at the SIFE National Exposition. In addition to our own SIFE Grenfell awards, some of the most notable achievements: SIFE Memorial was crowned SIFE National champion for the fourth consecutive year and will represent Canada at the 2009 SIFE World Cup championships in Berlin, Germany, this upcoming October; they also placed first in the 2009 TD SIFE Entrepreneurship Challenge, and second in the HSBC Financial Education Competition. Several campuses of College of the North Atlantic also competed and were recognized throughout the competition for their projects.
The awards ceremony’s keynote address was delivered by General Rick Hillier; Brian Tobin, former premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, received ACE Canada’s Gold Star award, which “recognizes the extraordinary efforts of the organizations, alumni, business leaders and top executives who go above and beyond to champion ACE within their companies, their communities and throughout the country” (ACE Canada).
