SUBJECT: Grenfell: Popular musical theatre camp to take to the stage

General audiences are invited to experience the theatrical efforts of campers enrolled in Grenfell College’s musical theatre camp.
Titled Rock around the Nation, the full-length original musical will play to audiences Friday, Aug. 21, and Saturday, Aug. 22, at 7 p.m. in the Fine Arts Building theatre. A free public matinee will take place on Saturday, Aug. 22, at 2 p.m. at Margaret Bowater Park. Tickets for the evening shows are $5 for student/child/senior and $7 for adults and can be purchased in advance at Community Education and College Relations, AS171, or at the door the night of the performance.
Running for two weeks, Aug.10-21, this camp encompasses a broad range of ages, from eight to 18 years of age.
“Students are learning audition skills, acting, voice, movement and stagecraft, all of which will culminate in a showcase production that features the greatest classics and latest hits off Broadway,” said Michael Parcon, activity camps co-ordinator. “We have welcomed all ability levels, regardless of the amount of experience participants may or may not have had.”
Artistic director Chris Jackman, musical director Shari Porter and choreographer Sarah Williamson are professionals working in Toronto. All three are university graduates and have extensive experience in the world of theatre.
Chris Jackman is in the third year of his PhD at U of Toronto's Graduate Drama Centre, where he is studying the impact of actors' training on their intuitive creative choices in physically devised performance. Directing credits include A New Brain (Queen’s Musical Theatre), Performative Exercise (U of T Drama Centre), and The Sound of Silence Acting Upstage), as well as assistant directing A New Brain at CanStage's Berkeley Street Theatre (Acting Upstage, dir. Daryl Cloran). He is artistic director of Open Corps theatre, having just remounted his successful production of Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris, and is a proud cofounder of Lock and Keynote, now in its fourth year of youth musical theatre productions.
Shari Porter is a graduate of Queen's University and now works as a music director and music teacher all over the greater Toronto area. Previous credits include Ike and Pearl (Palais Productions), Beauty and the Beast and The Wizard of Oz (Fallen Rock Productions), Man of La Mancha (Etobicoke Musical Productions), A New Brain and Crazy for You (Queen's Musical Theatre). She is dedicated to promoting the arts in today's youth and has music directed with Acting Up Stage's One Song Glory, a cabaret for young performers, for the past three years. She is also the cofounder and music director of Lock and Keynote Productions, a company that produces musical theatre camps in northern Ontario and western Newfoundland.
Sarah is a recent honours graduated from Ryerson University’s dance program. There she was chosen to perform choreography for some of the industry’s most respected choreographers such as Robert Glumbek, Patricia Beatty and Holly Small. Sarah was also able to perform in her own self choreographed solo works. Under the direction of Nadia Potts she continued her training in ballet, modern and jazz. Prior to her university training she received professional training from The National Ballet School as well as the Quintee Ballet School. Just recently, Sarah was a featured dancer for Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines (Majesty of the Seas). She is currently dancing for Cadence (Progressive Contemporary Ballet) and Lady Luck Productions. She continues to work as a passionate teacher and dance educator.
