SUBJECT: Grenfell: Grenfell College Student Union to hold Election Forum 2008

DATE: September 30, 2008

The Grenfell College Student Union will hold a candidates forum to inform students of the issues surrounding the federal election and to encourage student voters.
The forum will be held on Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. in the GCSU food court.
All candidates for the Humber-St. Barbe-Baie Verte riding have been confirmed: Lorne Robinson, Conservative; Gerry Byrne, Liberal; Mark Kennedy, NDP; and Wayne Bennett, Newfoundland and Labrador First Party. Students have been asked to submit questions to the GCSU via email, which will be posed to the candidates by a student panel during the forum.
“We’re hoping to increase student interest in the election,” said Andy Woolridge, GCSU vice-president external. “We need students to know that these issues affect everyone. It’s about being active members of society.”
Terry Randell, GCSU president, said the forum may also help students who are undecided and need more information about party platforms.
“This is an opportunity for the candidates to get their messages out to students,” said Randell, adding that the general public is invited to participate in the forum.
The student union also invites students and the public to watch election night coverage at the Backlot on Oct. 14.
