SUBJECT: Grenfell: Grenfell College recognizes scholarship winners; remembers longtime supporter Justice P. Lloyd Soper

DATE: March 23, 2009

Grenfell College recently held its annual scholarship reception to recognize its top scholars as well as remember longtime supporter Justice P. Lloyd Soper.
The reception, which marked the scholastic achievements of some 165 students, was dedicated to Judge Soper, who passed away on March 6.
It was a fitting tribute, given the support and encouragement shown annually by Judge Soper. He, along with his late wife Elizabeth, established the Honourable P. Lloyd and Elizabeth Soper Scholarship in 1994.
“Every year, Judge Soper and his wife, until her passing in 1998, and sometimes with other family members, came to this reception to congratulate and encourage the recipients of their scholarship,” said Mary Sparkes, co-ordinator, Student Affairs. “The enthusiasm and genuine support Judge Soper demonstrated over the years in his contact with our students will surely be missed. His legacy of rewarding academic excellence will continue long into the future and be felt by many deserving students.”
The students recognized at the reception received both entrance and undergraduate scholarships in the order of $270,000.
“The scholarship reception is a wonderful time for us to bring together the people who make the scholarships possible with the students who will reap the benefits,” said Mary Sparkes, co-ordinator, Student Affairs. “While we are saddened by the absence of our dear friend Judge Soper, we carry on the celebration today as we know he would have appreciated.”
