SUBJECT: Global cinema series kicks off for spring 2009

DATE: January 16, 2009

An eclectic array of international films are slated for a six-part film series to be shown at Memorial University’s Inco Innovation Centre lecture theatre beginning Jan. 20. First initiated by the Division of Lifelong Learning and the Faculty of Arts in spring 2008, this is a unique opportunity to view multiple award-winning films from across the world and participate in discussions moderated by Memorial University professors with expertise in each film’s subject matter.
The series begins Jan. 20 with The Black Book, the winner of Best International Film Award at the 2006 Venice Film Festival. Directed by Paul Verhoeven, the film relates the story of a young Jewish woman falls for a Gestapo officer while seeking revenge for her family’s murders.
Dr. John Buffinga of the Department of German and Russian will be on hand to present The Black Book and will lead the post-screening discussion.
Passes ($30) and single tickets ($6) can be purchased in advance through the Division of Lifelong Learning at 737-7979 or via e-mail at lifelong.learning@mun.ca.
