SUBJECT: Budding entrepreneurs compete in Entrepreneurship Awareness Day challenges

DATE: March 25, 2009

It will be an amazing race at Memorial on Friday, March 27, when the Campus Incubation Consortium hosts Entrepreneurship Awareness Day. Student teams will be dashing around campus, collecting passport stamps, creating products, making themselves into machines and learning about the resources on campus for budding entrepreneurs.
The Entrepreneurship Awareness Day events will be taking place between 11 a.m. - 2 p.m., at various locations across campus, starting and finishing in the Inco Innovation Centre. Each of the campus incubation centres will have a booth set up in the main lobby of the Inco Building to provide information on their services.
More than 10 student teams will be participating in the Entrepreneurship Awareness Day challenge competition and scavenger hunt. Each team will be given a passport with a map as they head out to visit the six incubation centres on campus: The Genesis Centre, the Gardiner Centre, SIFE Memorial’s Launch Pad, Enthuzium and the National Research Council’s Ocean Technology Enterprise Centre and Industrial Research Assistance Program.
At each location, they’ll have to complete a challenge ranging from spelling out “OTEC” with their bodies to creating a new product in order to gain a passport stamp. As the teams complete their cross-campus tasks with speed and creativity, they’ll be competing for a grand prize of 16 passes to Yuk-Yuks comedy club and an Ocean Quest diving experience.
Jaimie Feener, a B.Comm.(co-op) student currently working with the Genesis Centre, is one of the organizers of the event. She said they were looking for a way to get students into the different incubation centres on campus. “Lots of students have great business ideas but don’t know where to start,” she explained. “Entrepreneurship Awareness Day is a fun way to get students into the different centres across campus and hopefully they’ll learn about the resources that are available to them.”
Entrepreneurship Awareness Day is a partnership between all six entrepreneurial incubation facilities on campus and the Canada/Newfoundland and Labrador Business Service Centre.
