SUBJECT: A thousand more reasons to study at the Marine Institute

St. John’s, NL- The scholarship program at the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland (MI) has expanded once again as the institute announced new entrance scholarships for students enrolling in diploma and advanced diploma programs.
Starting September 2009, new diploma students with an 80 per cent scholarship average or greater will receive a minimum of $1,000. Students starting their advanced diploma in water quality, sustainable aquaculture, food safety or integrated coastal and ocean management will also receive $1,000 with an undergraduate cumulative average of 75 per cent or greater.
When you apply to study at the Marine Institute, you are automatically considered for one of these entrance scholarships. There is no scholarship application required.
Glenn Blackwood, executive director of the Marine Institute says that the institute is committed to the success of its students, and academic excellence should be rewarded. “Offering entrance scholarships to students who have worked diligently to obtain top marks is just one way the Marine Institute demonstrates its support for students,” he said.
“It is critical that we continue to attract the best and the brightest since Newfoundland and Labrador’s future prosperity is tied to the marine sector and the industries that depend upon it. Marine Institute graduates are the drivers behind the success of these industries, here at home, across Canada and around the world.”
Supporting students as they pursue their education and training is one of the key priorities of the Marine Institute. Their achievements in academics, leadership and community involvement are celebrated twice a year at the institute’s semi-annual scholarship and awards ceremony, where over $100,000 in scholarships and awards are presented to new and returning students.
The first entrance scholarships will be awarded at the institute’s Autumn Presentation of Scholarships and Awards.
