SUBJECT:

DATE: November 6, 2007

Note to editors:
There will be a media conference at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, in the Junior Common Room, R. Gushue Hall, to present the results of a detailed survey about housing for Atlantic Canadian Seniors. Dr. Donald Shiner, associate professor at Mount Saint Vincent University, will talk about the results of a survey completed by 1,702 Atlantic Canadian seniors about their current housing circumstances, their community supports and their plans and expectations for the future. The survey paints a picture of Atlantic Canadian seniors who are challenged to age in place and provides a glimpse into the future issues society will face in meeting their needs.
The survey was completed as the second phase of a four-part research project by the Atlantic Seniors Housing Research Alliance (ASHRA) titled Projecting the Housing Needs of Atlantic Canadians. There are nine Newfoundland and Labrador participants in ASHRA including co-applicant Dr. Patrick Parfrey, associate dean for clinical research (medicine), community representatives from the St. John's Nursing Homes Board, the Seniors Resource Centre Association and the Home Builders Association and government representatives from the Department of Health and Community Services and Canada Mortgage and Housing.
R. Gushue Hall is in the Paton College (residences) complex, located on Irwin’s Road directly off Prince Phillip Drive. Parking spaces are available in front of Gushue Hall.
