Grenfell College’s efforts to be a greener educational institution have been recognized in the latest edition of a national publication.
Alternatives, a Canadian environmental journal, highlighted Grenfell’s environmental studies degree, as well as other “green” programs, in its special campus directory of “Green Learning.”
Alternatives is a long-standing leader in environmental journalism that provides environmental ideas and solutions to readers. Alternatives brings together thoughts from experts who have a dedication to the environment and delivers up-to-date information on environmental issues in Canada and around the globe.
The AJ Environmental Education Directory 2007 is “a green glimpse into interdisciplinary environmental degrees at Canadian universities – and the thriving green student-movement on campuses across the nation.”
Grenfell’s initiatives are documented in the context of 40 Canadian universities. The idea is to give high school and university students, their parents, guidance counsellors and future employers an idea of what these selected schools have to offer.
Grenfell’s bachelor of arts in environmental studies program and its two streams in environmental perspectives and outdoor environmental pursuits were referenced in the directory. Environmental perspectives focuses on environmental policies, planning communication and education, while outdoor environmental pursuits investigates the impact of recreational activates on the environment. Grenfell also offers a bachelor of science in environmental science, and, most recently, a bachelor of resource management.
The directory also makes note of the student-driven Environmental Affairs Committee; the committee has been successful in spearheading green projects on campus such as purchasing recycling bins for residences and establishing a rideshare carpooling program.
