SUBJECT:

DATE: April 11, 2008

A partnership with the Department of Engineering and Applied Science on the St. John’s campus has resulted in the offering of the full first year of engineering courses at Grenfell College in the 2008 fall semester.
Traditionally, engineering students have been able to complete one year of general courses at the Corner Brook campus of Memorial University before transferring to the St. John’s campus to complete the degree. Recently however the Department of Engineering and Applied Science redesigned the program and introduced engineering-specific courses at the first-year level.
Students at Grenfell who are interested in engineering will be able to follow the same first-year program as their St. John’s campus counterparts, including taking the four engineering-specific courses in their first year.
“This partnership will allow us to continue serving the needs of students who intend to enroll in engineering and want to spend their first year on a smaller campus of Memorial University,” said Dr. Tom Daniels, acting vice-principal of Grenfell College. “We’re delighted to add another discipline to the growing list of subject areas we’re offering at Grenfell College.”
Dr. Daniels said Dr. Ray Gosine, former dean of Engineering and Applied Science, and Dr. John Quaicoe, current acting dean, were instrumental in facilitating this arrangement. He also noted that colleagues at the College of the North Atlantic (CNA) participated in discussions around this new programming initiative and offered to play a role where necessary, including the provision of its facilities as required for some of the technical engineering lab courses.
“The Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science is pleased to co-operate with Grenfell College and the College of the North Atlantic to make it possible for students to complete the Engineering One requirements in Corner Brook,” added Dr. Quaicoe.
Academic advisors will be in high schools in May to help students with the selection of these and other courses. For more information about the engineering program, or any other degree program at Grenfell College, please contact the Registrar’s Office at (709)637-6298 or info@swgc.mun.ca.
