REF NO.: 164

SUBJECT:

DATE: April 23, 2008

Note to editors:

Nineteen military firefighters and aircraft rescue personnel will be welcomed into the ranks of the Canadian Forces Fire Fighters on Thursday. The Marine Institute’s Safety and Emergency Response Training (SERT) Centre and the Canadian Forces Fire Fighting School will hold its first formal certificate awards ceremony at 1:30 p.m. April 24 at the Stephenville Military Armories in Stephenville.
Lieut. Col. Maurice Hynes will be the guest speaker for the graduation ceremony. The graduating class comes from the Canadian Forces Base Borden.
On Sept 17, 2007, the SERT Centre welcomed the first group of trainees. Young men and women from all over Canada converged on the centre to complete a 30 week program consisting of the Marine Institute’s basic firefighting modules with the addition of the aircraft rescue and firefighting (ARFF) program. This program was customized to meet the needs of the DND.
The relationship between Department of National Defence and the Marine Institute has been an enormous success for both organizations since its establishment in 1992. With each passing year, more and more naval trainees complete their technical training at the Institute and continue on to successful careers in the Navy. On average, about 100 naval trainees are studying at the Marine Institute throughout the year.
The media is invited to attend the ceremony and speak with military representatives and graduates.
