SUBJECT: Memorial University student journalist lands top national job

An Arts student at Memorial University of Newfoundland is set to take the reins of the oldest student news service in the world and North America’s only student press co-operative.
Sheena Goodyear, who is completing a double-major in English and Political Science, has just been named the new national bureau chief of the Canadian University Press (CUP).
She’ll begin her one-year, full-time job in May.
Ms. Goodyear is the current editor-in-chief of Memorial’s student newspaper the Muse and is originally from Labrador City. She’s set to graduate from Memorial this fall.
“When I applied I actually didn’t think I’d even get it at all because there are a lot of qualified people who run for this position,” she said recently. “I’m actually kind of still in shock but I’m really excited about it.”
The CUP is owned and operated by close to 80 student newspapers across Canada. As national bureau chief, Ms. Goodyear said she’ll be in charge of editing news stories for distribution on the news wire which will then be available to all CUP members.
“I like telling people’s stories for them,” Ms. Goodyear said about her passion for news. “For me journalism is storytelling and I think it’s incredibly important to provide a free press.”
Meanwhile, Ms. Goodyear said she’s confident her time with the CUP – in addition to the experience she’s gotten while at the muse at Memorial – will be a good opportunity to open doors to mainstream media outlets.
