SUBJECT: Memorial University gets ready to welcome students

DATE: August 18, 2008

Memorial University is gearing up to welcome students to the fall 2008 semester.
New students are encouraged to become part of Memorial’s biggest, most high-energy event of the year. Orientation 2008 is a two-day event designed to allow new students to become familiar with the next couple of years of university life. Orientation is designed to be fun, interactive and useful; it is a great way for new students to meet new people, learn to manage money, find out about courses and become a part of the university community.
Orientation activities take place on Memorial’s St. John’s campus on Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept. 2-3. Parent Orientation will take place on Sept. 1-2. Parents can choose to attend either day – as both sessions are the same.
Parent Orientation provides parents with an opportunity to meet and listen to the president of the university, the dean of Student Affairs and Services and a host of other academic and student services professionals. Topics include dealing with finances, social supports on embracing your own personal adjustment at this time of transition.
“Orientation is a chance for students and parents alike to learn all that Memorial has to offer and get some useful tips on how to make the most of it and at the same time meet others who are going through the same transition,” said Tom Brophy, director, Division of Student Success Programs.
Students register for Orientation as they would for a course: go to the student website and log in, click the registration menu, and when it asks for a CRN (Course Reference Number) type in 49524.
They will then get a card in the mail telling them all about Orientation. Students can also check out the online version in PDF form.
At Orientation, students get paired into groups of about 25. Each group will have one to two group leaders. As a group they go all over campus, participate in “MUNble Jumble,” attend a faculty fair, learn about on-campus involvement activities, see some entertaining skits and much more.
Meanwhile, orientation at Sir Grenfell College begins on Tuesday, Sept. 2, and runs through the month of September. This year’s orientation program at Grenfell is known as “Be a Part from the Start.”
Come to Orientation, become a part of it! For more information on the schedule of events for the St. John’s campus Orientation and Parent Orientation, visit www.mun.ca/orientation.
