SUBJECT: Memorial students taking on the world in the Big Apple

Students from Memorial University will compete alongside 45 teams from around the world at the 2007 Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) World Cup competition in New York City from Oct. 10–12. ACE Memorial won the SIFE Canada national competition earlier this year, earning the team the opportunity to represent Canada at the SIFE World Cup.
This is the second year in a row that ACE Memorial will compete in this global competition. Last year, the ACE Memorial team made it to the semi-finals.
ACE Memorial is a student group dedicated to finding entrepreneurial solutions to global economic challenges. In the past year, ACE Memorial students have given 27,693 volunteer hours on 23 projects.
At the World Cup, executives from the top companies in the world act as judges. Each team presents on the strength of their projects and the impact their work has on the community. ACE Memorial president, Heather Comerford, is confident going into the competition. “We’ve really built on the excitement from making it to the semi-finals in the World Cup last year”, she said.” Our projects are stronger than ever and the dedication of our students can’t be overstated.”
ACE Memorial projects aim to serve a variety of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.
They are working to re-open a pottery studio in Port Hope Simpson, Labrador that provides therapy and employment to residents living with Myotonic Dystrophy and also improves the economy of the small, struggling community. Other ACE Memorial projects help elementary school students get excited about recycling, teach high school students business skills, help new Canadians integrate into the Canadian business market, and help student entrepreneurs grow their business ideas into Canada’s next great companies.
Dr. Gary Gorman, dean of the Faculty of Business Administration, is with the team at the World Cup, along with ACE faculty advisor Lynn Morrissey. “The Faculty of Business is proud to support ACE Memorial. They are the embodiment of entrepreneurial vision and innovative spirit,” Dr. Gorman said. “I’m extremely pleased to see their work recognized. Our students being chosen to represent Canada on the world stage is an honour for the Faculty of Business and Memorial.”
