News Release

REF NO.: 0

SUBJECT: Grenfell - Orientation activities underway at Sir Wilfred Grenfell College

DATE: September 6, 2007

Grenfell College's annual Orientation activities aim to smooth the transition for new students entering the Corner Brook campus of Memorial University.
"Our Orientation program is for all new students, whether they are straight out of high school, mature students, or have transferred from another school," said Michael Parcon, orientation co-ordinator with Student Affairs, adding that roughly 200 students have registered for this year's activities. "Each year Orientation has grown bigger and better, and it now consists of a full week of activities instead of just a few days, with more events to follow throughout the rest of September."
Themed "Your Possibilities Are Endless" Orientation 2007 officially begins Monday, Sept. 3, although an information session for non-traditional students was already held last week.
"Throughout this week we will be offering an array of events including an information session on the different services available (Grenfell 101), campus tours, free swims, free ice skating, a concert by Hey Rosetta!, a sexual health night featuring Norman Nawrocki, a Beach Dance Party, Laser Tag, A Barbecue, dodge ball, a boat tour and a trip to Gros Morne," said Mr. Parcon. "Students will have plenty of opportunities to get comfortable with Corner Brook and Sir Wilfred Grenfell College while meeting lots of new people."
There are two Parent Orientation sessions: Sunday, Sept. 2 at 1 p.m. and Monday, Sept. 3 at 10 a.m. The sessions are designed for parents/guardians of first years to become more acquainted with the university, to learn about the various services Grenfell offers, and to provide parents with information regarding emotions and experiences they may have as their student adjusts to university life.
Orientation kits are available for $20, and are filled with lots of items to help get the student university experience off to a fantastic start. The kits include an Orientation 2007 T-shirt, a water bottle, clipboard, and loads more all stuffed into a knapsack. The kits are available for purchase by phoning 637-6232 or emailing saorientation@swgc.mun.ca.
Students or parents requiring more information should contact Mike Parcon, orientation co-ordinator with Student Affairs at 637-6232 or saorientation@swgc.mun.ca or Micheline Hughes, orientation co-ordinator with the Grenfell College Student Union at 637-6230 or gcsuorient@swgc.mun.ca. Or visit the Orientation website at www.swgc.mun.ca/orientation for up-to-date information on the many events happening during Orientation 2007.
