SUBJECT: Fry Family Foundation Scholarships Announced at Marine Institute

The scholarship program at the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland (MI) expanded once again today as the Fry Family Foundation announced new entrance scholarships for the institute.
Valued at $100,000 over five years, the Fry Family Scholarships will benefit Bachelor of Technology, Bachelor of Maritime Studies and Diploma of Technology students from Newfoundland and Labrador who demonstrate leadership abilities, academic success and ambition.
“The Fry Family Foundation is honoured to partner with the Marine Institute to provide these scholarships,” said Frank Fry, executive director of the foundation. “We believe that fostering leadership in our students is the first step in creating a skilled, highly educated workforce and the Marine Institute is an excellent example of how we are doing that for the ocean industries.”
Glenn Blackwood, executive director of the Marine Institute, is very pleased with the new scholarships. “Among the many donors who recognize the critical need to provide student support, the Fry Family Foundation continues to be a leader, supporting both scholarships and student leadership at the Marine Institute and in the province,” he said.
The first scholarships will be awarded to ten diploma students and two degree students at the institute’s Autumn Presentation of Scholarships and Awards on November 21.
The Fry Family Foundation is a US-based organization, founded and funded by Darryl and Marlene Fry, who were born and educated in St. John's, NL. Darryl, an alumnus of Memorial University of Newfoundland, will be honoured at the upcoming Alumni Tribute Awards on October 25, 2007. He will receive the Alumni Association’s highest honour, the Lifetime Achievement Award.
The mission of the foundation is to help in the education and the development of students (and in particular those who have demonstrated leadership ability), provide assistance to battered women and children, enhance the lives of senior citizens and help develop an appreciation for nature.
