SUBJECT: Faculty of Business announces Alumni and Entrepreneur of the Year

The Faculty of Business at Memorial University is proud to announce the 2007 Alumni Honour Award and the 2008 Newfoundland and Labrador Entrepreneur of the Year Award recipients. Both awards will be handed out at the 24th annual Partners Dinner on April 22, a celebration in honour of leaders in the local business community and partners of the Faculty of Business.
Brad Wicks, partner, Q.C., Roebothan McKay Marshall, and graduate of the MBA class of 1989, will receive the 2007 Alumni Honour Award in recognition of his on-going support of the Faculty of Business. Mr. Wicks is an active coach for graduate and undergraduate business case competition teams, former member and vice-chair of the Board of Regents, and former sessional instructor in the Faculty of Business.
Brian Dalton and Roland Butler Jr. will receive the P.J. Gardiner Institute’s 2008 Newfoundland and Labrador Entrepreneur of the Year Award. The two are founding partners of Altius Minerals, a successful natural resource project generation and royalty business based in Newfoundland and Labrador.
The Canada Revenue Agency, a longtime supporter of business students in the co-operative education program, will also be recognized at Partners Dinner for reaching a milestone in the co-op program.
Dr. Gary Gorman, dean of the Faculty of Business Administration, is looking forward to recognizing these individuals and groups. “The Faculty of Business has built strong relationships with the local business community, and Partners Dinner is our opportunity to say thank you for the support,” he explained. “It’s also a time to recognize the achievements of those who are making a difference in our Faculty and the greater community.”
Partners Dinner takes place on April 22, 2008 at the Fairmont Newfoundland. The reception starts at 6:45 p.m. for dinner at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available by contacting Wanda Whelan, 737-2182 or wwhelan@mun.ca.
Biographical Notes:
Brad Wicks, BA (’79), LLB (’82), MBA (’89), Q.C.
The 2007 Alumni Honour Award recipient, Brad Wicks is a partner with Roebothan McKay Marshall. While working towards his MBA, he was a member of the 1988 case competition team that won the first national championship for Memorial at the Concordia Cup. Since that time, he’s been a dedicated volunteer with the Faculty, helping graduate and undergraduate teams prepare for their own competitions. He is a former member and vice-chair of the Board of Regents and has taught as a sessional instructor in the Faculty of Business. Outside the university, he is a passionate volunteer. He is actively involved with the Law Society of Newfoundland and Labrador, the I.J. Sampson School Council, the Alzheimer Society of Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Newfoundland Brain Injury Association.

Brian Dalton and Roland Butler Jr. have been active in the Newfoundland and Labrador minerals sector for more than 15 years. They each began their careers as competing prospectors and exploration contractors while studying geosciences at Memorial University.
In 1996 they combined their efforts and co-founded Altius Minerals Corporation and set out to focus on the mineral exploration business in Newfoundland and Labrador. As leaders of the Altius team they have been involved in the generation of numerous diverse exploration opportunities in the province and have attracted a spectrum of major company joint venture funding partners to these opportunities.
In 2003, the two led Altius to the acquisition of a royalty interest in the Voisey’s Bay nickel-copper-cobalt project in Labrador that would later prove an important milestone in the company’s growth and long term security, ultimately launching Altius’ diversification into the Newfoundland and Labrador resources sector.
