SUBJECT: ACE Memorial defend their national title

DATE: May 12, 2008

Current national Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) champions, ACE Memorial, are at the national exposition in Toronto this week in a bid to be named the most enterprising campus in Canada and once again represent Canada in the SIFE World Cup.
Twenty-six business students representing Memorial University are at the competition to present on their community outreach projects of the past year. Due to their success at the regional competition in Halifax, this year ACE Memorial students will compete in three categories, HSBC SIFE Financial Education Challenge, TD SIFE Entrepreneurship Challenge and the Students in Free Enterprise Competition. The winners of the Students in Free Enterprise Competition will represent Canada in the SIFE World Cup in Singapore in October.
Dr. Gary Gorman, dean of the Faculty of Business Administration is already proud of the team’s accomplishments. “ACE Memorial projects positively impact Newfoundlanders and Labradorians and their success in competitions to date is an indicator of the impact of their programs and their immense talent and dedication,” he said. “I’m sure I speak for the entire university community when I say we are all extremely proud of the work they are doing and the success they have achieved.”
The ACE Memorial team has won back-to-back national championships and last year were named first runners up in the SIFE World Cup. This year, the team worked on 17 projects that impacted over 2,400 people all across Newfoundland and Labrador. Some of these projects include Moulder of Dreams, the reopening of a pottery studio for residents with myotonic dystrophy in Port Hope Simpson Labrador; Think Green, a project that taught business skills and environmental awareness to elementary school students and Launch Pad, the first and only incubation centre run by students for students at a Canadian university.
SIFE is a global organization that is literally changing the world through highly dedicated student teams on more than 1,800 college and university campuses in over 40 countries.
