News Release

REF NO.: 144

SUBJECT:

DATE: March 29, 2007

The chair of Memorial University’s Board of Regents, Gil Dalton, has announced that Memorial University’s Board of Regents resolved to create a search committee that will seek a new president for the university. The search committee is charged with finding a successor to Dr. Axel Meisen, who will complete his term as president of Memorial in August 2008, after serving in the role since 1999.
“As in previous searches, the committee will reflect the many groups, internal and external, who have a stake in the development of Memorial University,” Mr. Dalton said. “We plan to announce the names of the people chosen to serve on the committee after our May board meeting. Memorial is central to the economic, social and cultural development of Newfoundland and Labrador and this search committee has the important task of finding a new president to lead our university.”
Specifically, the board resolved to “seek nominations of, or applications from, suitable candidates for the position of president of Memorial University of Newfoundland by whatever means the committee considers appropriate.” The board resolution also charged the search committee with conducting interviews and recommending an appropriate candidate to the Board of Regents.
Memorial’s president is appointed by the Board of Regents, in consultation with the university’s Senate and with the approval of the lieutenant-governor in council.

The secretary of the Board of Regents, Eleanor Bennett, will act as the secretary of the search committee. Questions or further information regarding the search committee and the search process should be directed to Ms. Bennett at 737-8281 or eleanorb@mun.ca.
The board also resolved that it would have the names of those serving on the search committee at the next meeting of the board to be held on May 22, 2007, in St. John’s.
Mr. Dalton has written the secretary of Senate, the presidents of the four Students’ Unions, the vice-president (academic), and the vice-president (administration and finance) with respect to seeking nominations for the members mentioned in (c), (d), (e) and (f) above.
