News Release

REF NO.: 113

SUBJECT:

DATE: May 25, 2007

On Thursday, May 31, a public forum at The Rooms will examine the dramatic changes happening in rural Newfoundland communities, and ask whether these changes are inevitable, and what impact they will have. Issues and options – for example, should foreign purchasers be kept out, or invited in? – will be discussed.
“Have Your Say About Changing Outports” will feature a panel that includes Ray Johnson of Buddy Wassisname fame and vocal advocate of saving rural Newfoundland, Dr. Gerry Pocius of Memorial’s Folklore Department, David Bradley of the Association of Heritage Industries, Maureen Power, guest curator of The Battery exhibit, and Battery resident and radio producer Chris Brookes. It will be moderated by Jerry Dick, director of heritage with the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation.
Co-sponsored by Memorial’s Faculty of Arts and The Rooms, the forum is free to the public, and takes place Thursday from 7-8:30 p.m. at The Rooms, Theatre, Level 2.
