SUBJECT: PSA: Leading Lives Speaking Tour

For the 800 million people who go hungry each day, and the one billion who lack access to clean water, poverty is an absence of opportunity. Engineers Without Borders Canada (EWB) is responding to this need, helping people in developing communities gain access to technologies that will improve their lives.
Tom Owen is an engineering graduate from the University of Victoria and EWB overseas volunteer recently returned from spending two years in Ghana. Join him as he conducts a cross-Canada speaking tour sharing the stories of the people he encountered on his voyage along the Niger River.
The Niger River, often referred to as the pulse of West Africa, is home to many people who rely on it and its surrounding land for their livelihoods. By exploring technology’s role in their lives, Tom Owen will illustrate the creativity, determination and ingenuity of the people who call the banks of this river their home. The presentation and accompanying photographs will share stories of entrepreneurial men and women who have used appropriate technology to make their living.
The Leading Lives Speaking Tour will visit Memorial University Feb. 26 in the Inco Innovation Centre, room IIC-2001, at 6 p.m. More information on Tom Owen’s journey can be found at www.nigercurrents.ca.
