News Release

REF NO.: 90

SUBJECT: PSA: Impressions of a Newfoundland-Born Artist: Maurice Cullen (1866-1934) Presentation & Reception

DATE: March 15, 2007

Memorial alumni and friends are invited to a presentation by fellow alumna, Crystal Parsons, guest curator for the National Gallery of Canada 2006. The event will take place at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 22, 2007, and includes a musical performance in the Petro-Canada Hall, School of Music, at Memorial University's St. John's Campus. A reception will follow.
The evening will open with a short performance by a current Memorial University music student followed by Ms. Parsons who will talk about her upcoming exhibition centred on fellow Newfoundlander and renowned artist Maurice Cullen.
Born in St. John's and later settling in Quebec, Mr. Cullen received formal art training in Paris, and painted landscapes in places such as Brittany, Venice and North Africa. He is credited with being one of the first Canadian artists to introduce Impressionism to Canadian landscape painting – an important contribution to the development of art in Canada.
Ms. Parsons' exhibition, which is scheduled to tour in 2008-2009, will include works by a number of Mr. Cullen's contemporaries, including acclaimed artists William Brymner, J. W. Morrice and Robert Pilot plus Group of Seven member A.Y. Jackson.

A reception will be held immediately following the presentation where audience members will have an opportunity to meet Ms. Parsons and socialize with alumni.

Guests will also view the Internet-enabled Petro-Canada Hall. This teaching, rehearsing and performance space enables students to connect with mentors and colleagues and to work together on joint projects – regardless of where they are in the world.
Admission costs are $5.00 per person, and parking is available in lot 15B. For further information, contact the Office of Alumni Affairs and Development at rsvpalumni@mun.ca or call 1-877-700-4081 or 709-737-4354.
