SUBJECT: Memorial hosts meeting of the Statistical Society of Canada

DATE: June 11, 2007

As many as 400 delegates are attending the 35th annual meeting of the Statistical Society of Canada (SSC), being held at Memorial University in St. John’s from June 10-13.
Brajendra Sutradhar, Department of Mathematics and Statistics, is coordinating the conference at Memorial University. He said the theme for this conference is Statistics and the Environment, chosen to reflect fisheries and ocean-related research.
Although session organizers will be encouraged to make connections with this theme when possible, it is expected that there will be many sessions of broader statistical interest.
As in previous years, three workshops in biostatistics, survey sampling, and industrial statistics will be organized. In addition, case studies, contributed and poster sessions are planned.
The SSC presidential address will be given by Professor Norman Breslow from Washington University. He will speak on The Case Control Study: Origins and Modern Conception. Also the prestigious Gold Medal Talk will be given by last year’s gold medallist, Professor Chris Field. He will speak on Modelling Biological Data: Several Vignettes.
Dr. Sutradhar, a University Research Professor at Memorial, will receive the Distinguished Service Award from the SSC.
