SUBJECT: Grenfell - First class graduates from Masters Certificate in Project Management in Corner Brook

DATE: April 2, 2007

They’re all business. Heads down, concentrated, the participants in the four-month master’s certificate in project management focus on the tasks assigned to them during their last module.
They’ve worked diligently since October, learning the principles and methodology of the science of project management. Now, huddled in teams, they work together for the last time before their “graduation”.
“This process has taken us back to the basics,” says participant Murray Hupman, who has 15 years of experience in the project management field. “We’re relearning the methodology behind project management in a standardized way.”
Over the course of the program, the participants have learned about project introduction, project planning and control, team communication, project quality, project cost, management procurement and contracting, managing project risk, project integration and project simulation.
The program was launched at Grenfell College by the Division of Community Education and College Relations in partnership with the Centre for Management Development, Memorial University, and York University, Schulich Executive Education Centre.
Mr. Hupman says for people who are involved in contracting or managing projects, the course is “a definite.” With the master’s certificate under his belt, Mr. Hupman is now ready to proceed to the next step – writing the Project Management Professional exam.
“I’ll also be bringing this knowledge back with me to apply in our workplace,” he says.
Debbie Evans, a fellow participant, echoes Mr. Hupman’s sentiments.
“The facilitators have been unbelievable,” she says, noting that the modules, each with its own facilitator, have turned theory into practice. “We’re learning tools and techniques that we can take back to the workplace. It’s fascinating to hear about their experiences.”
“We’re so fortunate that this has been offered on the west coast,” she adds. “It has made it much easier for my employer to support me.”
