SUBJECT: Getting connected: Can communications technologies transform the Avalon Gateway region?

How can the Avalon Gateway region use information communication technology – such as the Internet, mobile phones, computers and satellite systems – to support economic development and improve its quality of life? Can these technologies improve education and health care in the region, lead to more competitive businesses and industries, and bridge the divide between rural and urban economies? 
            The Leslie Harris Centre of Regional Policy and Development, in partnership with Avalon Gateway Regional Economic Development Inc., presents the public forum, Getting Connected: Can Communications Technology Transform Your Community? on Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2006, at 7 p.m. at the Bird Island Resort, St. Bride’s.
            The forum will feature a lecture by Dr. Dale Foster, professor in the Faculty of Business Administration, Memorial University. Panelists include: Pat Curran, executive director, Irish Loop Development Board, Paul Dubé; executive director, Newfoundland Association of Technology Industries; and Harvey Brenton, marketing manager, Argentia Management Authority.
            The public is invited to attend and participate in a dialogue and a question and answer period. Reception to follow.

The Harris Centre:
 
The Leslie Harris Centre of Regional Policy and Development (The Harris Centre) was approved by the Memorial University Board of Regents on Sept. 8, 2004 and announced Oct. 1, 2004. It is named in honour of Memorial University scholar and president emeritus, Dr. Leslie Harris. Dr. Harris exemplifies the contribution of Memorial University to regional policy and development in Newfoundland and Labrador.
            The Harris Centre is tasked with coordinating and facilitating the university’s educational, research and outreach activities in the areas of regional policy and development. It works with all faculties and departments within the University and serves as a reliable point of access for all stakeholders seeking to work with the university in activities related to regional policy and development.
