Subject: The Fishery: Can It Save Rural Newfoundland and Labrador?
What is the future of the fishery of Newfoundland and Labrador given the changes in the resource, the markets and technology? What are the trends, here at home and abroad which are affecting the fishing industry of this province? What changes can we expect to see in the fishery over the next few years? Will these changes be enough to help sustain rural areas? What are and challenges and options ahead? A public forum, hosted by Memorial University’s Leslie Harris Centre of Regional Policy and Development (Harris Centre) held in Southern Labrador will examine these issues
The forum in partnership with the Southeastern Aurora Development Corporation (SADC) and the Labrador Straits Development Corporation (LSDC), is titled, The Fishery: Can It Save Rural Newfoundland and Labrador? And will be held on Wednesday, May 17, 20067:00 p.m. at the Northern Light Inn, L’Anse au Clair.
The forum will feature a lecture by David Vardy, former deputy minister of fisheries for Newfoundland and Labrador and former president of the Marine Institute. Mr. Vardy has participated in a number of ministerial panels on the fishery and more recently served as an advisor on fisheries management to the Royal Commission on Renewing and Strengthening Our Place in Canada. He is currently an associate of the Harris Centre at Memorial University.
He will be accompanied by an expert panel composed of: Kelvin Letto, fisheries representative on the board of the Labrador Straits Development Corporation, Gilbert Linstead, general manager of the Labrador Fishermen’s Union Shrimp Company Limited, Claude Rumbolt, fisheries development specialist with the Labrador Metis Nation.
