SUBJECT: SWGC: Student Housing introduces the GRENny's

DATE: April 11, 2006

CORNER BROOK – Grenfell College’s version of the Grammys was held last week.

The first-ever GRENny Awards were held by Grenfell’s Student Housing Office in the food court.

The GRENnys were held to recognize successful programs that staff and students organized in student housing throughout the academic year. The awards also honoured unique and outstanding contributions made by residents and/or student staff during the school year.

“We also thought it would be a fun time at the end of the school year and an opportunity to say goodbye to all residents, student staff and housing council members who are not returning next year,” said Jamil Karam, Student Housing manager.

The event included presentation of the awards, a slide show of photos of housing events during the 2005-2006 academic year and a reception.

“In student housing we have a strong emphasis on programming as a way to build community within the housing facilities on campus,” said Mr. Karam. “The GRENny’s were granted to successful programs in five different categories: learning, social, community, diversity and wellness).

Four leaders in student housing were also recognized for their dedication, leadership and commitment to the housing community – Alexander Goodyear (president of the Residence Council), Charity Mouland, Erikalynne Nelson and Vanessa Paddock (president of the Chalet Council) were all recognized for their student leadership.

GRENny’s also went to the following programs: Newfoundland Kitchen Party (Diversity – Residence 1st East); International Night Potluck (Diversity – Chalets); Sex Trivia (Wellness – Residence); Jam & Granola (Wellness – Chalets); Chalet Tubing (Community – Chalets); Rez Clothes Swap (Community – Residence 3rd West); Red, Black, and White Dance (Social – Chalet); Floor Birthday Party (Social – Residence 2nd East); “Crash” Education Night (Learning – Residence 1st West); Rez Social (Event of The Year); and 2nd East won Rez Wars.
