SUBJECT: SWGC: Bonnie Baxter at Sir Wilfred Grenfell College Art Gallery

DATE: February 3, 2006

World-renowned artist Bonnie Baxter will bring her exhibition Bonnie Baxter: Rewind to the Grenfell gallery this month.

Bonnie Baxter is a highly respected and successful printmaker who lives in Montreal and teaches at Concordia University. Bonnie Baxter: Rewind represents a decade of the artist’s transformative exploration in multiple mediums, including the digital print, video and performance. Baxter’s process links her to a generation of artists exploring a way to connect with the digital world, observing with the objectivity of the camera eye and simultaneously becoming the object of the “gaze”. Baxter’s work embraces the immediate and the experiential. Atmospheric, haunting and a little humorous, her investigations in new media are rewound for the viewer, deconstructed and re-established in her most recent bodies of print.

Bonnie Baxter is in residence at Grenfell College from February 6 to 11 to install her exhibition and work on a collaborative project with senior printmaking students of the Visual Arts Program. Baxter will present a talk on her work during the opening reception, 7 p.m. on February 9. The gallery will host an Open Portfolio event with the artist on Saturday, February 11 at 11 a.m. Local artists working in the print and digital media are invited to bring portfolios of their work for discussion with Bonnie Baxter. The exhibition runs February 9 to April 1, 2006.

The exhibition catalogue REWIND, a collaboration between Galerie Simon Blais and the Musée d'art contemporain des Laurentides (published by Éditions d'art Le Sabord) will be available for purchase at the gallery on opening night.

Sir Wilfred Grenfell College Art Gallery is located on the Grenfell College campus in the Fine Arts Building on the second floor. The gallery is open to the public from Tuesday to Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free.
