News Release

REF NO.: 259

SUBJECT:

DATE: April 18, 2006

For years Sharon Duggan, vice-president, Customer Services, Transformation and Development at Aliant, and Paul Burt, owner of P. S. Atlantic Limited (Paint Shop), have been quietly building successful careers and companies. On April 27, the Faculty of Business Administration will reward these two inconspicuous agents of change with its most prestigious awards at the annual Partners Dinner.
Mr. Burt, B.Comm. (Co-op) (Hons.) ’86, will receive the P. J. Gardiner Institute’s 2006 Newfoundland and Labrador Entrepreneur of the Year Award. Mr. Burt’s connection to the Paint Shop began in 1975 when his father became the province’s first Paint Shop franchisee. Since then, Mr. Burt and his team have grown the business to include 31 Paint Shop Home Decorating Centres. The company has been ranked the number one Canadian retailer for Benjamin Moore for the last 10 years; and recently entered into a strategic alliance with Benjamin Moore to service over 350 independent retailers across the country.
Sharon Duggan, B.Sc. ’75 and MBA ’93, will receive the faculty’s 2005 Alumni Honour Award. The award recognizes the accomplishments of business graduates and the contributions they make to the faculty and university. Ms. Duggan has been a member of the faculty's Advisory Board and regularly supports student case teams and other faculty activities. She currently serves on Memorial’s Board of Regents and volunteers with several other community organizations.
“Paul and Sharon have both assumed leadership positions within their respective organizations,” said Dr. Gary Gorman, dean of Memorial’s Faculty of Business Administration. “While the businesses they represent are very different, they have both tackled significant challenges related to change management, growth and diversification. I am delighted to be able to highlight the accomplishments of these two wonderful individuals who have quietly been making a big difference to the local business community.”
The 22nd annual Partners Dinner will be held on Thursday, April 27, at 6:45 p.m. at The Fairmont Newfoundland; dinner will start at 7:30 p.m. For tickets, RSVP to Roma Bowen by April 21 at 737-2182 or rbowen@mun.ca.
