SUBJECT: Well-known fish expert to speak at Memorial University

Prominent marine biologist/geneticist and fish expert Dr. Tom Cross will deliver an interesting lecture at Memorial University’s Ocean Sciences Centre on July 22, 2005, entitled Population structure in wild cod and the genetic similarity of farmed strains: A journey from St. John’sin 1975. The lecture is part of a four-day visit to this province by Dr. Cross, a molecular genetics professor in the department of zoology at the National University of Ireland, Cork. The public lecture begins at 1 p.m. in the Challenger Room at the Ocean Sciences Centre.

Dr. Cross’ major research interests are in molecular genetics, fish culture and aquatic biology. He has previously studied Atlantic salmon, halibut and cod. His other areas of interest include fish culture and aquatic biology. Dr. Cross has research links around the world, including Canada, and has completed a post doctoral fellowship investigating biochemical genetics of cod and salmon with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans in Newfoundland and Labrador.
