Dr. William Cochrane, an internationally recognized biotechnology executive and entrepreneur, will deliver the Killam Fellowship Lecture on Thursday, Nov. 4 at 5:15 p.m.in the Fort William Ballroom, Salon B, Fairmont Newfoundland Hotel. The lecture is titled Issues and Challenges to Commercializing University Scientific Discoveries. The lecture is part of the Canadian Association for Graduate Studies 2004 annual conference happening from Nov. 3-6, 2004, in St. John’sat the Fairmont Newfoundland Hotel. A reception will follow the lecture.
Dr. Cochrane is well-known throughout the biotechnology sector for this innovative work. Among his many senior appointments, he has been the chairman and CEO of Connaught Laboratories Ltd., founding dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Calgary, president and vice-chancellor of the University of Calgary, and former pediatrician-in-chief for the Izzak Walton Killam Hospital for Children in Halifax. He has also been recognized with several high distinctions and honors, including the prestigious Order of Canada. Dr. Cochrane currently works as a health product investment consultant and serves on the boards of Vasogen Inc., MDS Capital Corp., StressGen Biotechnologies, and Selective Genetics.
The Killam Foundation for Educational Exchange between Canada and the United States of America is a joint, bi-national treaty-based organization created to encourage mutual understanding between Canada and the United States through academic and cultural exchange. The foundation is supported by the Canadian Government, through the Department of Foreign Affairs, and by the United States Government, through the Department of State. The foundation is also supported by a diverse group of corporate sponsors, charitable trusts, and a select group of university partners. The Killam Fellowships Program is a new initiative for the foundation and is supported by the American Killam Trusts.
